October 29th-Zeus

Zeus (Zeusz) is cross created by Hungarian grape breeders in 1951. It was named after the Greek god. It is a white grape that is high yielding and susceptible to botrytis bunch rot. The grapes are usually left on the vines and harvested late. They retain their acidity and are usually sweet. The grape is grown in western Hungary in Badacsony and Somlói (located just north of Badacsony), where it thrives on volcanic soils. It joined the national grape registry in 1994. It is usually made into varietal wines but can be added to blends to add sweetness and tropical fruit character. It can also be made into a dry wine but that is uncommon.

While wine tasting in Badacsony, I tried a blend of Muscat Blanc à Petite Grains, Hárslevelű, and Zeus. This 2020 Valibor Vince Bora is a moderate lemon color with aromas of quince, lemon zest, white flowers, honey, vanilla and pears. It was named for their son Vince. It was aged in barrels to increase texture and add complexity. It is a dry wine with a fuller body and low alcohol content.  It has a moderate level of acidity. On the palate, this wine shows ample tree fruits and citrus, along with vanilla from the barrel aging and some minerality on the extended finish. This wine would pair well with lighter meats or asian cuisine.
