Xynisteri is an ancient white grape variety that is indigenous to Cyprus. It has been grown on the island for thousands of years and is the most planted white grape variety on island today. Xynisteri is known for making wines that are crisp and delicate with green fruit, citrus and floral notes. It is used to make dry wines but can also be used in the production of Commandaria. Commandaria is a sweet wine that may or may not be fortified but is usually fortified. When used in dry wine production, it is often blended with either local white grape varieties or with international grapes such as Semillon or Chardonnay. These grapes increase the weight of the wine. It can also be used in sparkling wines for its sharp acidity. Xynisteri is drought tolerant, making it ideal for hot climates. It also is increasing appeal to many growers as climate change is more problematic.
During the recent tasting of Greek wines, I tried a 2023 Makarounas ‘Aerides’ Xynisteri. The 30-40 year old vines are ungrafted and all grown on the estate. This wine is 100% Xynisteri. It has a pale lemon color with notes of grapefruit juice and pith, meyer lemon, orange blossom, peach, nectarine, melon, and salinity. This dry wine spent up to 6 months on lees to increase the body, which is balanced by the high level of acidity. The bright fruit notes were refreshing on the palate with salinity on the extended finish. This wine is a great summer time wine to pair with sunshine, fresh seafood, light fish, and a cheese plate!
