August 28th-Mallorcan Negre

As a follow up to last week, this week, I chose a red Mallorcan blend. The red grapes rescued from extinction are Callet, Gorgollassa, and Manto Negro. Callet is a rare Mallorcan grape typically used in blended wines due to the lighter style wines it produces on its own. It may be related to Manto Negro but the genetic heritage of Callet remains under debate. It is commonly planted with Manto Negro vines and can be used to create field blended wines. Manto Negro is the most widely planted red grape in Mallorca. It typically produces lighter wines with a higher alcohol content, which can be balanced with the lower alcohol grape Callet. Gorgollasa is another indigenous red grape in Mallorca. It is a descendent of Monastrell, a Spanish red grape. It was near extinction when 200 vines were planted from 4 vines in the late 1990s. Plantings have continued to increase since this time. Unlike the previous grapes mentioned, Gorgollasa responds well to wood aging and has a greater tannin content.

This week, I had a 2023 Sincronia Negre blend that consisted of 45% Cabernet, 35% Callet, 13% Gorgollasa, 6% Manto Negro and 1% Monastrell. This wine is a pale ruby color. It has aromas of red currant, cranberry, blackberry, dark chocolate, salinity, and wet stone. This medium bodied and medium alcohol wine also has a moderate level of smooth tannins. There is a significant level of acidity, which makes it a great wine to pair with food. The fresh fruit notes linger on the long finish. This wine would pair with lighter meats such as pork or chicken, as well as fattier meats like steak or bbq. It could also pair with mushrooms or a cheese board. This is a good bottle to bring to dinner when you don’t know what is being served!
