May 15th-Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo

Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC is the rosé wine of the Marche region of central Italy. The wines are made using at least 85% the flagship wine of the region, Montepulciano. The remaining portion can be up to 15% local white grape varieties. Cerasuolo translates to ‘cherry red’, in reference to the color of these wines. The grapes macerate on their skins for less than 24 hours. This short period of time limits the extraction of color and tannins from the skins. They are known to have more texture than most rosés from Provence in southern France. Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo has the reputation for being a rosé that can be enjoyed year round, not just as a porch pounder in the summertime. There is also Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo Superiore DOC that undergoes barrel aging prior to its release a year after the grapes are harvested. The barrel aging can increase the complexity of flavors on the palate by adding almond or spice notes.
